Proteins and Alzheimer’s Disease: Breakthrough in Alzheimer’s Research

????????????????????????????????????????Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a form of dementia that affects about 5.3 million seniors a year in the United States.  The hallmark of dementia is decreased cognitive function and memory loss, and in Alzheimer’s patients, the disease could cause the elderly to forget basic facts such as the names of their loved ones and their own address.  The development of Alzheimer’s evolves over a long period of time, which probably explains why it is most prominent among the aging population.  According to a study in the Nature Physics publication, researchers have discovered a possible theory why Alzheimer’s evolves at such a rapid rate in seniors.

In a nutshell, this pervasive memory neurodegenerative disease is caused by a build-up of certain proteins called amyloid-beta, and researchers from the University of Cambridge have identified a way to control the growth of these proteins within the brain.  When amyloids replicate at an exponential rate, the resulting symptoms follow:

  • Inability to remember one’s own name and phone number
  • Confusion about time, date and year
  • Wandering and getting lost
  • Asks the same questions repetitively
  • Aggressive behavior
  • Loss of emotional inhibition
  • Delusions (believing that caregivers and family members are stealing from him)
  • Loss of basic abilities to perform activities of daily living
